FLEETING DESIGNS
Remember this beauty? The Designer Showcase 2025 “Splash of Color” done by Space Stylists & Co - and yours truly.
You can read more about the design process and bathroom in this series of blog posts here, and here, and here, and here :)
Through a bit of a chance encounter, I found out recently that this bathroom - completed in Spring 2025 - is already demolished. Gone. Extinct. Only remembered by photos. At first, I was offended. Did they know how much that wallpaper cost?? Did they know the stress I had over the wall trim?? What about the agonizing process of the atypical communication process that stretched my patience thin?? Did they buy the home and think “first things first - this bathroom has to go”???
But no - nothing so dramatic. The new homeowner decided to redo the floor plan, subsequently deleting the bathroom. It wasn’t the design, just plain and simple they needed a new layout to make their space function for them.
Were my countless hours wasted? Well, no, we have these awesome photos to remember it by, and I learned so very much. I also got to step out in faith on this project and really dive into residential design and construction. And I got to do it all while pregnant with my little girl, and with my boys as little toddlers making site visits with me, which will always be special.
This whole experience though was humbling, and that is why I wanted to share it with you all. You can put in hours and hours of time into something, only to feel like the result was in vain. Have you had an experience like that?
Isn’t motherhood a little like that in the early years? Countless hours spent cooking, cleaning, preparing, caring - only to discover you forgot to do the load of laundry with the only jammies that fit your baby, or a toddler refuses the delicious dinner because today just isn’t the day, or to think you finished cleaning only to realize you missed a spot or two (or many).
I think I am learning that there is value to these efforts, even when the results are less than desired.
The stress I put on myself through the Designer Showcase was completely wasted. I could have relaxed and enjoyed the process more. I could maybe have one less grey hair. Ultimately though, the journey is the important part, and often the stress I put on myself is unnecessary.
Most everything in this world is fleeting - physical items will deteriorate, buildings are demolished, and places change. Fun, colorful wallpaper ends up in the dump. The eternal is the important part though, our souls are what matter, and striving for virtue and sainthood is what the journey is for.
Here is to embracing the journey, taking one step at a time, and relaxing a little in failure. Oh and surrendering the “right now” to Jesus - because He can take care of it better than I can anyway.
