THREE LOVELY SOULS

With high hopes and big dreams, my husband and I started our kitchen and flooring renovation while I was pregnant, with plans to have everything completed before baby girl’s arrival. Spoiler alert: baby girl is here (yay!!) but our kitchen is not.

Throughout the renovation while I was pregnant, I wanted our home back. I wanted to be in a house that had a functioning kitchen. I wanted to be nesting and preparing our home for the soon arrival of our little girl. I wanted to get the closet set up just so, the guest room prepared for visitors instead of a storage space for nearly a third of our possessions, and I wanted to feel like I was in control and making our space beautiful.

But my, oh my, did it prepare me for labor, the newborn phase, and the constant surrender that is necessary in motherhood.

Does my house look as I want it to, a couple weeks postpartum? Not quite. Do I have all the projects done that I dreamed I would have completed by the time our little girl arrived? Nope. But, the beautiful thing is my family and I have a space to make memories together, to weather the long nights with a new family member, and a space that holds this sacred chapter of life.

My brand-new floor with crumbs from the last meal my boys ate? The unfinished kitchen I can’t wait to have complete? The same sweet room I designed for my oldest boy that has been slightly altered with each new kiddo? Holy Ground. This is holy ground, the life-lived, functional home that allows my husband and I to serve the children God has gifted us. Even if it’s function isn’t as useful as it could be.

Will I get back to a season where I am able to maintain the home I love? Sure. Will we have a season where our house feels less chaotic and more restful? Absolutely. But this season is reminding me that the most beautiful things in our house are the three lovely souls that call me mama, and no Pinterest-worthy house (or finished kitchen) could ever replace that.
