REMODELISTA BOOK REVIEW

With the majority of the interior design inspiration and examples on social media or a virtual platform, it can be nice to grab a physical book to look at printed images of inspiration. Here at Space Stylists & Co., I am adding in another series to our blog posts. In addition to our educational interior design finishes posts, lighting tips, portfolio reviews and more, I am also going to share some fun book highlights with you all.

Here is the first one, so let’s get started!

I recently got a copy of Remodelista: the Organized Home book by Julie Carlson and Margot Guralnick. There were quite a few interesting organizational tips and rules of decor listed throughout the book, and have highlighted below a few of my favorites!

1.“Think Like a Shopkeeper” Page 59: As an interior designer, there were some great points on this organization tip! The points encourage thinking like a retailer and focusing on grouping like items, and keeping storage light and simple so things do not get lost behind something else. There were many functionality considerations as well, such as locating daily dishware in a cabinet next to the dishwasher, clear counters in workspace, and storing extra “inventory” in harder-to-reach cabinets since they are accessed less frequently.

2. “Nesting Suitcases” Page 118: This tip is pretty simple, but if you aren’t using it in your storage space, get to it! Placing varied sized suitcases inside each other for storage is ideal for maximizing storage space. I have a set of 3 different suitcase sizes and they nest beautifully, putting that largest suitcase to work. The Remodelista book also recommends keeping packing accessories and stocked toiletry kits inside the smallest suitcase, which I could see being helpful as well! Personally, we have our toiletry bags easily accessible, and overflow storage of travel-sized items for ease of packing. If only I could get my kiddo’s travel items organized better, then I would really be all set!

3. “The Underworld: Chart New Territory Beneath Your Sink” Page 153: Those under sink cabinets can get gross real quick, with the out-of-sight and out-of-mind mentality. If you happen to unfortunately have a leak under your sink, it can be more difficult to detect if that space is cluttered and dirty. I love the recommendations for this space including creating a trash bag roll dispenser, and the Ikea wire curtain rod for hanging some cleaning essentials off the shelf. I have also seen using a spring-curtain rod for this use as well, which I love the idea of! This chapter also has a recommendation for a basket of clean and dirty washrags, however I find with the frequency I end up with damp washrags cleaning up food from my cute kiddos, rinsing and dropping the rag in the washer functions better for my family at this phase in life.

There were many more tips included in this book, and as you can see by the orange sticky tabs in the photos, I had quite a few ideas I wanted to remember or implement in my own home. There were many more tips about considering the functionality of your space, grouping like items with like, and keeping items on display for easy access and use.

Do you have a favorite organizational tip or would you like help re-imagining an area of your home? Let’s start today!
