SALE SHOP SUCCESS

I used to be a sucker for the clearance aisles at Hobby Lobby, AtHome, etc. (who am I kidding - used to be??) I love strolling down the sale aisles looking for that random decor item that I didn’t know I needed until I saw it - and then had to have it. $2 for a small vase? Of course I could use that. A random frame with a random saying in it? No problem a little paint couldn’t fix.

What started off as a nice way to stay on budget while decorating soon became a problem. I was storing random decor items, for that “someday” that I needed a white glass milk jug or a chalkboard sign. Part of it was I was collecting items while I was renting, so all of my homes were very temporary. A couple years and the next one I might decorate a little differently since I couldn’t paint the walls.

While this could be a good habit to have, and a great way to collect some beautiful decor on a budget - there are a few important things to keep in mind, so let’s explore them below!

  1. Have a Plan: When you own your home, or plan to stay for several years, this can be an easier task. Have a dream or vision for your home. While my Signature Workshop is the perfect place to start for this, even finding one photo as inspiration for your home can be helpful. It narrows down your main colors or direction for your home. A mood board is another great step - and you might have a different one for each room or area of your home. This can get more detailed and focus on textures and furniture pieces in addition to just color.

  2. Know where it is going: One of my quick recommendations for decluttering is to make sure each item in your house has a home. Because that is what clutter mostly is, right? Items that end up sitting anywhere and everywhere just because you don’t know where they should go. When you are looking at sale decor items - think of exactly where you want to use it. If you can’t think of a good permanent home for it while you are in the aisle, leave it for someone else!

  3. Is it broken, and will you fix it?: Ahh… yes… the “oh I could easily fix this I just need to blah blah blah”. Stop right there! This is only for the times when the item is perfect and you have a realistic plan, AND the time to complete it. No procrastination, no delays, and no purchasing other stuff to make it happen. I have had a couple times this worked out, and times it didn’t. Be honest with yourself!

Hope these tips help the sale aisles become more productive shopping instead of a reason for clutter!
