Space Stylists & Co. was selected to be a featured designer in the 2025 Home Builder’s Association (HBA) Designer Showcase. This event happens once a year in our city, and features a fancy home in a sought-after neighborhood each year. Sometimes the homeowners move out while renovation occurs, and other times like this year, the homeowner was simply investing in the home for a future owner.

The journey began when we toured the whole house to submit our room preferences, and the beauty of a bathroom seen below was what we got selected for. The black boards on the walls? The upside-down shelving unit with the toilet paper roll? The tank of the toilet high in the sky? All fun items we couldn’t wait to address. The classic claw foot tub and gold towel bars were beautiful in their own aged way, and we could see the potential.

We returned to the bathroom after selection to gather dimensions and dream about what this space could look like. Next step was to create a presentation for the homeowner and HBA Committee. We were told the homeowner wanted to honor the history of the home and wanted to invest in bringing it back to life. I leaned into the more traditional approach and created Option 1A and 1B in the presentation, a green bathroom design and blue bathroom design. The inspiration came from the wallpaper pattern, and maintaining the elevated trim that was located in portions of the existing bathroom. Another Space Stylists & Co. designer went very trendy with the Option 2, creating a bold, spunky and fun twist on traditional design, pulling in some colors from the 1950’s.

After great review, the trendy modern design was selected! Many of the other designers were also presenting along these lines and colorways, and since the homeowner was prepping for resale value, a cohesive home was the way to go. It makes sense to go bold and trendy for maximum client potential, and it provided a fun twist to this historical house.

There were many swaps that happened throughout the process. Our original light fixture was also presented in another room, and the other designer reported that the size was fairly small, so it was swapped out for a different fixture. The homeowner liked the original tile we presented, but the physical sample came in more blue than we wanted, so we swapped for a green square tile, but the homeowner wanted to go rectangular, so she opted for the green tile which was a popular part of the bathroom design by the touring public. Shopping for accessories was a blast, but also required lots of careful consideration and thought as to how they would support the wild wallpaper and not distract from it.
