LET IT WORK FOR YOU

Working the beginning of my career in commercial interior design gave me a skewed view of pricing for interior furnishings. I knew everything in the commercial world was more expensive, or at least a larger scale, and therefore a bigger price tag.

However - now in residential design - I find the prices of some interior furnishings comical. Thousands of dollars for a chandelier? No thanks. Over a thousand dollars for one side chair? Hilarious. A couple hundred dollars for a luxurious blanket my washing machine can’t handle? Not in my house. That blanket will have spit-up on it in no time.

Maybe it’s just because I am not a millionaire (are any of you out there??) but it is also not ideal for my season of life.

I have three sweet kiddos, ages three and under. And I love them dearly. My two oldest are boys, and do you want to know what became a new toy for them recently? My living room rug. They made mountains out of my beautiful living room area rug with an assortment of toys. These sweet kiddos put balls, cars, etc. UNDERNEATH the rug to create a series of mountains and valleys. And then we raced cars over them. They made a tunnel underneath it and crawled all the way through, giggling along the way. And it was so fun.

Would I enjoy these games if we had a multi-thousand-dollar rug? No. It would give me heartburn. But our current rug (although I love the color and pattern) was somewhere over $100. Does it get creased with all the playing? Sure. But it flattened out in a day or so and you couldn’t even tell a wooden firetruck zoomed over an imaginary rug-mountain and flipped into a valley before racing off again just the day before.

Traditional interior design and decorating sometimes makes me think of pristine rooms that have a hefty price tag that are more for viewing than using, and that is just sad. Why spend money on the square footage just to look at the space instead of inhabiting it?

I want the things in my home to be used. I want them to look nice together, but I also don’t want to have a heart attack if something gets damaged, because it exists to be used. The home and items in it are to function for YOU. Let it work for you.

I am all about the sales, discounted items, and finding knockoffs of pretty things so you can have a home that represents your heart, on your budget. Even if that means your home is created over years, not days, one small update at a time. It’s fun, and worth it.
